Philadelphia to increase police presence on South Street with another busy weekend expected

PHILADELPHIA (June 10, 2022) — The Friends of the South Street Police Mini-Station today issued the following statement in support of Philadelphia law enforcement responding to last week's violence in the city's entertainment district:

"The events of last week are tragic and should never occur again. We continue to urge city officials and the district attorney's office to support the South Street Police Detail by addressing nuisance behaviors and through the proactive utilization of public safety resources and the enforcement of laws.”

"The Friends of the South Street Police Mini-Station would like to commend Lt. Michael Long, Sgt. Paul Sprigg and the officers of the South Street Police Detail for their actions during the recent shooting incident on South Street.”

"This overburdened detail has the experience and knowledge of the complexities that make up South Street. It was not by chance that these officers were on site and ready to take action. It was the result of their experience on the street, planning and expertise. We are grateful to these officers for their courage and their dedication to their profession and the community.”

"Through the strategic deployment of officers by South Street Command, an officer was able to immediately engage and confront an active shooter to stop him. These brave officers transported victims in real time, took back the scene and directed medical services through crowds of thousands of people. The South Street Police Detail was able to save countless lives during this intense situation."

Organized in 1985, the Friends of the South Street Police Mini-Station is a partnership of local community and business groups working together to further develop public safety with the collaboration of police, residents, community organizations and the business community. The coalition advocates for more resources to improve safety in our neighborhoods to control the intricacies that make up South Street and the impact the street has on the adjacent communities.
